Will Donald Trump Make a Deal?

Last week, Donald Trump has been indicted at the federal level by the special prosecutor. I don’t think that he would make a deal, but I would not put it past him either.

Here are a few points to consider:

So far, Donald Trump has dealt with the federal indictment almost exclusively as a political issue. He gave fiery speeches, fired off social media posts, and raised millions of dollars off of it. How he will spend his golden years, will however ultimately be a legal matter.

In terms of legal defense, it will not cut the deal to just say that this is all a political witch hunt. Isn’t it also noteworthy that Trump is still in the process of assembling a team lawyers? There are generally two reasons why lawyers in the US take on clients: either because it’s a good case or because it pays well. Both does not seem to be necessarily the case here.

I remember how Alan Dershowitz, Professor Emeritus from Harvard, said to always assume that your best friend will flip on you once they face the enormous pressure of the prosecutors. In that sense, it will be interesting to see what Trump’s final chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and in particular Trump’s aide Walt Nauta, will have to say.

On the political side, I get the sense that Trump is not into the campaign as he used to be. His wife, children and the big crowds are noticeably absent. And if your heart is not into something, you tend to underperform. I also think that his lead in the polls has only one way to go in the medium term-down South. As I have mentioned numerous times, the race for the Republican nomination is just about to start.

Put differently, there might be important developments during the course of the next year on both fronts, the political and the legal one. And in the past, Mr. Trump has repeatedly shown to be quite flexible when circumstances change.
