Running for office is cheaper than what you may think, because the impact of money is generally overestimated. Keep in mind that both Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton outspent Donald Trump — and guess who’s sitting in the White House.
There is a long list of well-funded campaigns ending up losing because money in itself doesn’t mobilize people, cannot create enthusiasm for a candidate, and doesn’t communicate a message. A lot of money in election campaigns is wasted — sometimes, frankly, on crooks. This could be local leaders or religious leaders who promise votes, or it could be social media people who promise a candidate miracles they can produce on social media, when they have never really actually won an election campaign.
And then, a lot of money is wasted on campaign material that doesn’t communicate a message and is just empty rhetoric. I think the power of a well-researched campaign message that is in sync with the political demand is underestimated. You can push and promote a message with less money. The key here is to have a well-researched message that is really in sync with the political demand of your target audience — and then to have enough money to communicate that message and carry out and execute your campaign plan.
